Okay, so I have to admit, the Watchmen was probably the most amazing movie I’ve ever seen, hands down. I know it’s not for some, and it’s getting very mixed reviews, but I’m one that loved it. It was a lot different than what the trailer gives you, which is why some people are upset, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad film. I had a lot of fun going to go see midnight showing, as it was my first ever midnight showing and I’m glad the Watchmen was given that honor to be my first. A lot of people dressed up as the characters, there was an Ozymandias, 2 Dr. Manhattans I believe, and a Rorschach. It had an exceptional soundtrack, although they played Hallelujah [the bad version, ugh] during probably my least favourite scene. [I’ll tell why it sucks]

I’ll tell about what made it great and lightly cracked it for me with hopefully not too many spoilers, as I’m sure some people on here might want to see it.
[If you are unfamiliar with the Watchmen, just pretend like you understand my geekiness]

Let me just start off by saying that the Watchmen isn’t a kid friendly comic, and never was. That’s why it has more of a cult following than a well known one. The film itself is rated R for graphic violence, sexuality, nudity, and language. My favourite characters are Silk Spectre 2, Rorschach [pronounced Rorshack], and Dr. Manhattan. At the beginning of the movie, it is told and shown that the Comedian is murdered [which most audience members don’t care about since he is the epitome of an asshole, I was glad], and Rorschach is convinced that someone is trying to pick off masked heroes, and is the only one of the Watchmen that believes this. The rest of the heroes are retired, except for Dr. Manhattan [which couldn’t retire if he wanted to, he is basically made out of electricity.] and aren’t interested in bringing back the team. At the current time, the US is being threatened with nuclear war by the Soviets, and the people look to Dr Manhattan to save them.

Things that made the film interesting:
-Dr Manhattan is nude. Okay, at first it’s a childish thing to say, but Dr Manhattan isn’t supposed to be really nude. He’s supposed to have obscure genitals, or he wears some underwear type thing every once in a while. What shocked people is that fact that it’s like watching a naked blue guy walking around, penis/testicles n’ all.

-The believable [and short and far between] fight scenes. Forget cheesy, half assed moves from the Matrix, the work that was done on the Watchmen’s fight scenes was well done and realistic, and it saved it.

-The sex. You’re warned by the R rating, but not really humored until you get into the theatre and well into the movie. It’s interesting to see sex scenes like the ones in the Watchmen when there are usually never graphically sexual scenes in comic book based flicks. This will lead to one of my other bullets.

What made me livid:
-I mentioned that Silk Spectre and Dr. Manhattan were my favorites correct? Well, they are lovers, or used to be. I like them together and that’s the way I want them to be. [There’s a sex scene between them (sex with electricity sounds amusing to me)] In the film, Silk Spectre leaves Dr. Manhattan and goes to live with Nite Owl 2. They end up having sex [the most graphic sex scene in the film (Hallelujah is played)] and that pissed me off. I like the Nite Owl character itself [even though all he really is, is a brown version of Batman (cop off!)], but the man that plays him was irritating, and I believe that Silk Spectre should only be with Dr. Manhattan character wise.

- It was terribly anticlimactic, which threw a lot of people off. There was no rising acting, climax, or falling action, it was just the same level of excitement throughout the whole film. There was a good story though, I’ll give them that.

Overall I loved it, as I said. After I finish this one book I’m reading for a book report, I’m going to start on the Watchmen graphic novel, which will be epic, but in a different sense than the film was. I recommend it, but only to people who find the trailer stimulating, or are into comic books/the Watchmen.
